I think about this a lot when it comes to my dad.
My dad would have enjoyed his life so much more if he hadn’t been so deeply skeptical, often cynical, and stubbornly stuck in his ways.
He didn’t believe in changing — because what you know always feels safer than what you don’t.
He didn’t see the point of looking inward, since that would mean facing feelings he didn’t want to handle (like me leaving home, or making choices he didn’t approve of).
His sentiment kept him enslaved to old ways of being.
It stripped him of the present — because he was too busy living in the past, in the “good old days.”
So he carried stress like it was normal.
Ignored deeper hurts.
Clung to rigid stories about how life should be.
And eventually, his body couldn’t keep absorbing what his mind refused to address.
It’s been six months since he passed.
And I keep thinking:
👉 His death wasn’t just about dementia.
In some quiet but powerful way, his mindset played a role too.
Why am I sharing this?
Because it’s easy to dismiss all this as woo — or “not proven enough.”
But neuroscience is catching up.
